WINNER - SINGER/SONGWRITER
FINALIST - OTHER
Marilyn Rucker
Marilyn Rucke
r

Known as "The Wicked Wit of the West" sizzles on the piano and sings a mean song. Not mean-spirited, mind you, but the lyrics are far darker and more satirical than you might expect from someone who looks like the girl on the Alabam Pickle Jar. Or rather Wholesome, with a capitol W, but don’t let appearances fool you. She is a wit with an edge like vinegar and eighty-eight spicy keys to back her up.

Voted one of the areas top ten keyboardists in the 1999 Austin Chronicle Music Poll, Rucker currently lives in the "Live Music Capital of the World." Her masterful playing and singing reflect obvious influences from Tom Lehrer, Blossom Dearie, Dave Frishberg, and Diana Krall, but her songs and her style still retain a fresh perspective. Her songs Snot Nosed Rag, Codependent Christmas, Happy Whatever You’re Having and Twenty Naked Pentecostals have all been played on the Dr. Demento national comedy radio show, and her c.d. Voyeur Princess is receiving radio and internet play around the world. Her song If I Could Be Like Xena, a tribute-parody lovingly dedicated to the infamous Warrior Princess of television, is included in one of the first MP3 programs, The Best of Independent American Music, and is helping to revolutionize the music business. All in a day’s work for Rucker, who continues to insist she is really a milksop at heart.
